Overview
Congrats! You’re ready to set a long-range strategy. You may want to drive business unit, product, and/or go-to-market outcomes across the organization, or unlock ambition and create ownership across the company. Regardless of the strategy you’d like to set, the importance of connecting the company’s long-term vision to near-term measurable outcomes is clear.
Create a Strategy
- Navigate to https://strategy.myworkboard.com/
- If you haven’t set a Strategy yet, click Set your first Strategy. If you’ve already set a Strategy, click on Set new strategy.

Fill out the fields
Strategy name: Create a name for your Strategy
Time horizon: Select either a pre-selected fiscal year compilation ranging from 2-5 years, or select a custom date range
Strategy type: Choose a Strategy type from the dropdown that most closely aligns to your vision
Iteration cadence: Select whether you’d like to iterate on your Strategy Annual, Biannual, Quarterly, or Monthly - Select Get Started
- (Optional) To quickly add more context to your strategy, click Add additional details
- (Optional) Search and select the strategy or strategies you’d like to link to your strategy
- Click Next
- (Optional) Search for and select people you’d like to add to your strategy
- Click Next
- (Optional) Add strategy narrative by clicking Add narrative and then clicking Start strategy or click Skip for now
Add Mission, Vision, and Values
Articulate where you want to be and the principles that will get you there with optional mission, vision, and values.
You might use this when crafting a company, product, or business unit long range strategy.
- Click Overview
- Select Get started
- Fill out the Mission text box with a statement that articulates the strategy's purpose
- Enter your Vision, the big picture of what you want to achieve
- Enter a Value by word or short phrase, and then press enter or return on your keyboard. You can add as many values as you like.
- Fill out a Narrative, with any trends or beliefs that inform your strategy
- Choose Add to save your Mission, Vision, and Values
Add Strategy Pillars
When creating a pillar, ask the question: What would be true for our team to achieve our strategic vision?

Click the blue button Add pillar
- Enter your Pillar name
- Choose Add narrative to add commentary supporting your pillar
- Select Add
Pillar Outcomes
The outcomes are the resulting business results if the Strategy is achieved.
- Click Add outcome

Describe your outcome

To add other supporting details to your outcome, click Advanced details
Outcome: Name of outcome
Target completion: Target date of meeting outcome
Target value: The measured target value depending on selected unit of measurement
Unit of measurement: Select unit measured between Count as percentage, Count as number, Count as currency
Who will measure progress?: Assign the outcome to appropriate owner
- (Optional) To connect existing Key Results to the outcome, click Link key results

(Optional) Search for and select key results to link to the outcome
- (Optional): Select the check box to include closed objectives.
- (Optional): Choose Link
- Click Add
Pillar Assumptions
Assumptions are what must be true in order for the team to achieve the Strategy.
- Click Add assumption
- Describe your assumption

To add other supporting details to your assumption, click Advanced details
Assumption: Name of assumption
Time horizon: Date by which assumption validity will be addressed
Who will evaluate validity?: Assign user who will be responsible for evaluating validity
- (Optional) To connect existing Key Results to the assumption, click Link key results
- (Optional) Search for and select key results to link to the assumption
- (Optional) Choose Link
- Click Add
Pillar Investment Plans
Investment plans are the areas that the team must dedicate funding, resources, or time to be setup for success in achieving the strategy.
- Click Add investment target
- Describe your investment target

To add other supporting details to your assumption, click Advanced details
Investment target: Described investment target
Target value: The measured target value depending on selected unit of measurement
Unit of measurement: Select unit measured between Count as percentage, Count as number, Count as currency
Who will track investment?: Assign the outcome to appropriate owner
- (Optional) To connect existing Key Results to the assumption, click Link key results
- (Optional) Search for and select key results to link to the assumption
- (Optional) Choose Link

- (Optional) Paste a URL and name plan or Upload file

Pillar Risks
Risks are potential blockers that prevent the strategy from being realized to its full extent.
- Click Add risk
- Title your risk

To add other supporting details to your risk, click Advanced details
Risk: Title risk
Mitigation Plan: Description of how to reduce impact and likelihood of the risk
Time horizon: When you anticipate to mitigate this risk by
Who will manage the risk?: Person responsible for evaluating and addressing the risk
How often?: How frequent the risk should be evaluated
(Optional) Upload evidence: Supporting documentation to aid in mitigation efforts
(Optional) Align key results: Select key results that influence realization of the risk - Click Save
Pillar Linked Objectives
Linked Objectives capture the shorter term OKRs that are influenced by and drive the execution fo this longer range strategy.
- Click Link Objectives

Search for and select objectives you’d like to link
(Optional): Select the check box to include closed objectives.
- Click Link
Pillar Attachments
Attachments are any work products or artifacts that are related to your strategy.

Click Add attachment
- To add an external link paste the URL and name the link
- To upload a file, click Or Upload File and add a document from your computer
- Click Done
Frequently Asked Questions
Do aligned Objectives impact the progress of the outcome/pillar achievement?
Aligned Objectives do not impact the progress of the outcome/pillar achievement unless the progress is update manually or if the Automate outcome progress via aligned key results option is selected.
